NOS tubes, but managed at the end. Now I find the base to be deeper and tighter, midrange tonal accuracy and presentation to be first class. These tubes also improved the highes; i.e., they sound more natural and extended, does not make you tired. The PH3-SE is rated at 54db of gain and is compatible with MM and MC cartridges. 54db of gain is not particularly high for a phono pre-amp and, indeed, the PH3-SE is not a good choice for low output MCs. I am quite surprised that this would pose a problem for any line level preamp.

I love my ARC PH3se. I also have a Parasound JC3+ on another system. Both are good. But if I had to keep one it probably be the ARC. That being said, it’s getting old, no it is old, and one day it may (will) go to the great audio heaven (assuming I don’t just repair it) in the sky.

The PH7 is a much better component, but is also much more expensive. The PH7 has better dynamics, air, resolution, speed and imaging. It also has more gain and is substantially more quiet. The PH7 has the typical ARC neutral tonal balance. The PH3-SE has a warmer sound; some find it pleasing and some find it to be overly colored.
