That being said, I don't recall feeling I was missing anything in the lower frequencies and the REF3 certainly had good bass extension, just not big bass. The 3 had a bit better resolution, detail and neutrality. The 27 had more of the old school Audio Research warmth and what some refer to as tube magic.

The new LS 27 is coming to the dealers now. Called the Audio Research and they said the new LS 27 sounds better than the Ref 3 and very close to Ref 5. That is the reason why the listing price of the LS 27 is changed to around $7,000 so that it won’t affect the sales of the Ref 5 too much. Have you heard the LS 27 and how do you like it?

From what folks say the LS27 is as good, or better than the REF3 As an owner of several 'good' preamps, i say the Audio Research LS27 is a great buy. and a great deal for you with the trade in you can get. I own an ARC Sp-15, a VAC Standard, and a Bryston BP-26 I have to say a really good preamp is always a joy to own.
