Following the introduction of their very expensive, tube/FET hybrid SP11 preamplifier, there were rumors that Audio Research was working on a hybrid tube/transistor preamplifier targeted to cost less than $2000. The rumors were confirmed when ARC showed a black-and-white photo of the SP9 at the 1987 Winter CES. Obviously, like all magazines, we …

Having used the SP9 mkII for 9 years I for one am enthusiastic about it. The amplifier is sweet sounding, smooth and holds its own in the lower octaves. It is sensitive to differences in tubes - tuberolling can yield intersting results. The preamplifier has kept up with the continuing improvemenst in the rest of the system.

Audio Research SP9 Review - VintageSonics

    https://vintagesonics.com/reviews/amplifiers/audio-research-sp9-review/
The SP9 is a fantastic do-it-all preamplifier that’s beautifully crafted, easy to use and own, and just about reasonable. Audio Research Corporation has created a great many pre and power amplifiers over the years, but the SP9 stands out as a great do-it …

The last Audio Research product to grace the pages of Stereophile was the original SP9 preamp, which got a rather lukewarm review at the hands of both J. Gordon Holt and John Atkinson (Vol.10 No.8). That was 2½ years ago! A follow-up to that review is in progress; only the flagship SP15 preamp now remains a stranger to Santa Fe.

The Audio Research SP-9 redefined the term “bullet-proof.” While previous all-tube models often encountered noise, channel imbalance, hiss and distortion, this new hybrid design was dead quiet, linear, and most of all, musical. The SP-9 hit retailer’s shelves in 1987 with an MSRP of $1,695 and offered tremendous value.

Is the SP9 Mk.II a better preamp? Read on. The SP9 Mk.II looks a lot like its big brother, the 66%-more-expensive SP14. My sample came in the optional black finish and looked good, though I prefer Audio Research's traditional silver look. The dull silver lettering on the $s3?/?1?6"-thick black front panel is not easily legible in dim light.

Editor: The overwhelmingly positive response of the world marketplace to the Audio Research SP9 preamplifier makes Gordon Holt's reaction more than a little puzzling. In response, Audio Research Corporation would offer the following considerations.

Preamps have come a long way in the last 30 years, even in the last 10 years. I owned a SP9 in the late 1980s. Most of my later preamps were much better. The Audio Research LS25 mk2 I had was a huge improvement over the SP9. Not to mention my current Ref 5se which is infinitely better.

In their literature, ARC warns that the SP9 needs to see quite a high amplifier load impedance: 60k ohms in parallel with 100pF is recommended, the capacitance being very low, equivalent to no more than 2 meters or so of a typical audiophile interconnect.

Audio Research SP9 preamplifier Page 2 Sound Quality On first listen, using high-level sources only, I am saddened to report that the sound was not good. In fact, it was hard, rough, thin, and both spatially and dynamically compressed. The phono preamp added more …
