But this VT100 has a huge soundstage and it really make orchestra shine. All big symphonies sound as magnificent as they can be, which, I think, outbeat other tube gears at the same price range. Resonance of harp or guitar is the best I ever heard. Don't think it is good for classical music only. I can dance with pop music on this baby too.

VT-100 still has the most natural decay, bloom, and tonal balance compared to all. A lot of you guys might argue tubes create euphonic bloom in midrange, but I live right next to a Steinway for three years and I know what they sound like in real life. This is simply one of the best amp on earth for the price.

The VT100 was more detailed but sounded a bit thin next to the V70. It also lacked much of the midrange magic of the V70. I now own a Ref 110 which is much better than either the V70 or VT100. The Ref 110 is far more detailed then the VT100 with the midrange magic the V70 had. And KT120 tubes make this amp even better.

Recently, a close friend loaned me his VT100 MkI, as he is not using it. Damm if this thing didn't shock me. I mean it sounds really, really good! Now for the delima. He wants to sell it (asking $1500..all original tubes, so I assume I'll have to replace them fairly soon, but otherwise in excellant condition), but I've seen MkII's around $2000.

I only wish I had the amp when I auditioned my next preamp, the CJ Premier 16LS, which is absolutely magical. I believe this preamp could have filled in where the Audio Research was lacking. I wish I could give the Audio Research VT100 MKII 4 1/2 stars because it is better than 4, but not perfect. Give it a try and see for yourself, I give it 4 stars!

As they sat next to each other in my listening room, the family resemblance between the Reference 110 ($9995) and my VT100 Mk.II was strong. Aside from the 110's slightly deeper chassis and thicker faceplate, they were tough to tell apart. But a look inside at the circuit design showed the Ref 110 to be a completely different animal.
