CJ Premier 11a vs. Audio Research VT50/VT100MKII ? I'm currently running a CJ Premier 11a driving a pair of Thiel CS 1.5's. The CJ has 4 6550 output tubes. My preamp is the Audio Research LS16. My main source component is the Cary 306/200 24/192 CD player. This combo sounds very nice to me.

Audio Research products have never subscribed to the warm-and-rich valve stereotype, and the CA50 was no different. It was insightful, dynamic and neutral. Aside from a slightly overripe low bass – only noticeable with big speakers– it was beautifully balanced, and capable of playing all types of music with skill.

Audio Research VT80 Power Amplifier. By John Richardson. I miss Sam Tellig. I always read Sam’s column in Stereophile as soon as the newest edition hit my mailbox; I found him to be an entertaining and informative writer. It was great to read about his European adventures, and the offbeat audio personalities he hung out with (Roy Hall included).
