In FCP we deal mostly with three different audio sample rates: 32khz, 44.1khz, and 48khz. Most digital camcorders record audio at either 32khz, 48khz, or both. Audio CDs are 44.1khz.

Before you import CD audio into FCP you need to change the audio sample rate from 44.1 KHz to 48 KHz. You also need to convert the file format to "AIFF". This can be done with either iTunes or QuickTime. I use the QT process because I often trim my audio tracks before I import them. Using QT you can only import one track at a time.

Converting to 48kHz before export or bringing the audio to the Timeline is much safer. I'm not even sure if FCP X will convert the audio from 44.1 to 48 at Export/Share even though the MetaData seems to indicate that it is. After a test or two it seems that the 48kHz option appears regardless of the Timeline settings.

48k is what FCP edits with, but chances are it will digitize the materail at 32k. After you capture you can convert the audio to 48k. When capture over FW, you usually can’t change the sample rate, FCP automatic will detect it. So you’ll want to convert it after you capture. Good Luck, Todd at UCSB Television Production
