I'm having a problem with skipping audio on two different machines, both with up-to-date Ubuntu 12.04 Desktop installed (one 32 bit, the other 64) It doesn't happen all the time (maybe once per song when it gets bad), and happens regardless of the program creating the audio (could be streaming through Grooveshark, or playing files with VLC, etc.)

lspci | grep -i audio this is very suspect - do you really have two video cards from different manufacturers ? Which of these appear in output of : sudo lshw ubuntu releases new versions every 6 months (12.04 was released month 4 of 2012) so 12.04 is 18 months old - I also experienced sound issues on earlier releases - ubuntu 13.10 seems fine.
