A couple days after that, my printer stopped working. I had to set it up again and go through a headache and hassle to get it working again. Now, it just stops working after a while periodically, and I have to reboot. In the mix, I uninstalled AVG and installed Avira. Somewhere between these two, the sound stop working.

Try uninstalling the driver from the deivce manager and let it reinstall on reboot. Also I used to have an issue with Windows 7 beta where my realtek onboard audio used to stop in the middle of playing back media. From the Start Menu in either the search box or the Run box type: services.msc.
