ATH-M40 is Audio-Technica's "straight frequency response" monitor model. Now in fairness, "straight response" for headphones is one that's adapted to your own HRTF frequency response. These are equalised to an average HRTF, but yes, they are quite "straight" in response. With one caveat...

ATH M40fs vs ATH M50 : Audio Technica I know these headphones have been highly reviewed and such, but I am still unsure which I should get. Main goal is to get the flattest, most natural sound. Interesting. I demo'd the ATH-M50, ATH-M40fs, and ATH-M35 side-by-side at the Audio Technica booth at AES NYC 2013 in the Javits center a couple of weeks ago. It was in a noisy exhibit hall, but all three headphones were plugged into the same source. All three sounded quite fantastic. Low end extension is excellent without boominess or muddiness.

The Audio-Technica ATH-M50x and the Philips SHP9500 are both very good headphones for fans of a neutral sound, but they use different enclosures, which changes a couple of things. The closed-back design of the Audio-Technica results in better noise isolation and punchier bass, but makes the headphones sound more closed-off.
Audio-Technica ATH-M50xBT review - SoundGuys

The Audio Technica ATH M50xBT reproduces very clear audio with a consumer-friendly frequency response. You’ll notice that songs with low background synths and kick drum samples with “thump” a little more with this kind of sound. For example, this is very apparent when you listen to Queen’s Radio Ga Ga.
