I can hear high frequencies that I didn't hear with similar or lower priced headphones. The bass is "true" and clear with no distortion and is not accentuated like so many headphones and speakers are these days.

The ATH-M40fs are a pair of closed circuit studio headphones. They are very affordable only costing 69 bucks. They are very comfortable around your ear and you can wear them for hours without them getting uncomfortable or irritating you. The cushions around your ear are soft and keep some of the outside unwanted noise away from your ears.

Impedance is 60-ohm, but the ATH-M40 are fairly easy to drive, an Apple Touch 4G player drives them to almost full noise isolation on the street. Not obnoxiously loud, but given the thing's low power, the ATH-M40 provide a stunning detail. They are a bit on the shouty/cold side when driven from proper headphone amps (and studio kit like mixers).

With pop, rock and small scaled classical music – vocal ensembles for instance, I really prefer the ATH-M40′s over the ATH-A500′s. The sound is so pleasant, easy on the ears, more direct and less bassy. And this is true for poor recordings and MP3′s as well, even the crappiest recordings sound reasonable, never harsh or shrill.
