I have waited a while to write this review. After over a two years of use I have come to understand just what the ATH-M50 is, and dramatically what it is not. As with many things on Head-Fi, it is not that simple to just write a short review. Hopefully I can shed some light on what the M50 is for headphone enthusiasts in 2016.
Audio Technica ATH-M50 Review - Official Review

Audio Technica ATH-M50 Review. First, let’s get this out of the way: the ATH-M50’s are the best headphones you can buy for under $200. In fact, if you’re budget is $300, I would still recommend the M50’s, along with the classical music oriented Sennheiser HD598’s. This review will explore the sound and build quality, as well as ...

The audio Technica ATH-M50X is a good headphone to listen to bassy music. However, I do not think they are studio quality. Soundstage is good and the high's are quite accurate. Mid's are ruined by the overpowering bass. The earpads are an awkward shape and can be very uncomfortable. Better alternatives exist.

This fellow had also gone on Head-Fi and looked up what he wanted out of a headphone. All good. When the friend I had come up to visit and was staying with asked what a good choice of headphones are, I wholeheartedly recommended the Audio-Technica M50’s and this fellow recommended the V-Moda’s.

Basically an ATH M50 with the long awaited detachable cable. It ships with 3 different cables: 4 foot straight, 4 foot coiled and a 9 foot straight. However, you have to use Audio Technica cables since it has a twist lock mechanism. If you are looking for good quality audiophile/studio headphones, these are great.

The Audio-Technica ATH-IM50/70 series has gained popularity and favourable reviews from members of Head-Fi, as it should. The Japanese designed 8.8mm "dual symphonic driver" proves to be more than capable for its asking price, and once again reinforces the notion that Japanese audio engineers know what they are doing.

(Not for the office - link contains profanity) OK - don't shoot the messenger - this is more rant than 'review' but Zeos is clearly smitten. Probably the only reviewer who uses ' whoosh' to describe an attractive attribute in the sound of a headphone, but that's one of the few terms I can actually quote in a Head-Fi post. I'm guessing the M60X has missed the Head-Fi FOTM …
