These new M40fs headphones, I have the same tendency to up the bass sometimes. But they are super crisp and clear in the mid and high frequencies, and the bass is solid and not at all muddy. They sound awesome at mid-high volume, and a little EQ helps at low volume, to my ears. Comparing the M30 and M40, I would say they are both very comfortable.

Not obnoxiously loud, but given the thing's low power, the ATH-M40 provide a stunning detail. They are a bit on the shouty/cold side when driven from proper headphone amps (and studio kit like mixers). What matters though is that they detect and show even very slight hiss and are suitable for track cleanup.

The ATH-M40fs are a pair of closed circuit studio headphones. They are very affordable only costing 69 bucks. They are very comfortable around your ear and you can wear them for hours without them getting uncomfortable or irritating you. The cushions around your ear are soft and keep some of the outside unwanted noise away from your ears.

With pop, rock and small scaled classical music - vocal ensembles for instance, I really prefer the ATH-M40's over the ATH-A500's. The sound is so pleasant, easy on the ears, more direct and less bassy. And this is true for poor recordings and MP3's as well, even the crapppiest recordings sound reasonable, never harsh or shrill.
