Budget Moving Coils: AT-OC9 ML II vs AT33PTG?
https://forum.audiogon.com/discussions/budget-moving-coils-at-oc9-ml-ii-vs-at33ptg
Has anyone here ever sat down an listened to the difference between the Audio-Technica AT-OC9 MLII (the newer version of the original AT-OC9) and the AT33PTG? Both cartridges are close in price, but the AT33PTG sells for a few dollars more than the AT-OC9 MLII. Also, the AT33PTG is not a US item, but is available in the States through a couple ...
AT33EV vs. AT-OC9ML/II | Steve Hoffman Music Forums

The 33 EV has elliptical stylus, the OC9 has a micro-line one. Micro-line, something tells me instinctively, should be able to scoop more detail from the groove. The 33EV, however, gets recommended a lot more, and seems to cost a lot more, MSRP-wise. Regardless of MSRP, I can buy the 33 for about $475 today, and the OC9 for $419.

I then tried an ATOC9 MLII which maintained the detail and brought back the impact. I rate the OC9 MLII very highly, but I would believe that it can sound a bit strident if not used in the right system (for reference I used it with a Technics SP-15/Audio Technica AT1010/Denon HA-500 head amp combination).
Audio Technica AT-OC9XEN/XML vs AT-33EV/PTG | pink …

The EV has a warmer overall balance whereas the PTG is leaner and brighter (IMO superior). They sound like different carts. It also depends on the arm, table and phono stage that you are using. While I think the 33EV is fine, my cheaper AT440mlb sounds much better on my Technics 1210mk2 even with a cheaper phono stage.

I haven't heard/read anything on the newer OC9's. Likely all good, for their price point. If you can up your game a few more, the ART9 is unquestionably a step above. Read the threads.I've used one off an on the past 5 years. Presently on my table. Save your obsession/audio nervosa regarding compliance. Just get an AT whatever and enjoy the ride.

While the AT-OC9 bears the Audio-Technica logo, you won't find a sample of this moving-coil cartridge at your friendly Audio-Technica dealership. The US distributor of Audio-Technica products has apparently decided that their market does not include high-end cartridges. A quick perusal of the latest Audio directory issue (October 1988) lists the most expensive AT …
