ATI cards have had the ability to pass audio through the DVI connector on all their HD series cards. Here's the theory: DVI and HDMI carry the same digital video signal, & HDMI can carry an audio signal too. There are some unused pins on the DVI connection. ATI uses these pins to transmit the audio.

Sure, it's been a standard feature of ATI cards since the HD 2900 XT, but it required a special DVI -> HDMI dongle capable of passing through the audio. DVI doesn't support audio, but a lot of video cards actually have an HDMI port on the DVI. Though DVI is kind of old for a card as new as a 1030. Are you sure it isn't a display port instead? Display port does support audio, and many video cards actually are displayport++ ports which mean they can talk HDMI without needing an active adapter.
