I synced by iPhone with my mac, using a cable not over wireless. And once the audiobook was on my mac and had played on there (only a few seconds) it then worked on my iPhone. I downloaded another audiobook a few weeks later, and that played fine- without syncing it with my mac. So I'm not sure what actually happened, but it is now working.
