A5 sounds more relaxed. I think you need to consider price. The Audioengine a2's are $200 a pair, the a5's are $325 and the KRK VXT6 are $900! Of course a $450 speaker is going to sound better than a $100 one! I am with the op, I am looking for a good sounding pair of sub-$200 powered monitors to use on my desktop.

Re: Audioengine A2 active speaker repair. Measure the voltages on pins 1, 3, and 5 of the chip with the multimeter +ve (red) probe. Download the data sheet so you know where the pins are. For each measurement, the multimeter -ve (black) probe will be on the circuit ground.

Audioengine is not a high-end brand and I really don't know why they are so popular here or why there are such high expectations of them. They aren't $5 speakers and they aren't awful, but just because you like the simplicity of active speakers/"monitors" doesn't make them the best choice.
