Since the AudioEngine speakers have built in amps, their input would be low level, around 2.5 volts and low current. If you tried to feed the output of another amp into the AE2 input, you would have to use something like an L-pad to reduce the voltage anyway or you would overdrive the input, causing a lot of distortion(or even destroy the input drivers).
