The A5+s being much larger (and having a higher output amplifier) means that they can play a good bit louder, and they do also have a little more low end extension on their own. Honestly though, I think picking between them really comes down to how you plan to use them.

The A5+ have a lot more power and are much more dynamic. The A2+ don't have much sub bass at all and really need a sub to fill in the sound, I imagine the HD3s are similar. I would pass on the HD3 since you already have an Audioengine D1, the extra cost is for the built in DAC and wireless capabilities.

The A5+ suffers from a smiliar problem. I owned a pair of A5+'s for a little over a year and I found that the A5+'s had too much mid bass, not enough sub bass, and the highs were just OK. I ended up selling them, and now I own a pair of Fluance SX6 bookshelf speakers along with a Topping TP22 amp, and they sound much better to my ears.

audioengine A5+ vs audioengine hd6. Hey there, I want to buy either the audioengine A5+ or audioengine hd6. I guess the hd6 is the newer generation of audioengine, right?
