And so it was no surprise that, along with a preamplifier (the 8000C) and matching monoblock power amplifiers (the 8000M), the company started work on a CD transport and DAC. The result was the 8000CDM, which featured a Philips CDM9 Pro mechanism housed in a conventional Audiolab 450x320x75mm chassis.

This CD player incorporates Sony's top of the line DA converter, which there top of the line $3000 dollar cd player houses. After hooking up both CD player with Cardas Microtwin cables, I put both CD players through there paces, with the same familiar music. The Audiolab CD player won hands down. The sound was obviously more accurate, more defined.

When the 8000CDM transport was introduced in 1993, a couple of years after the original 8000DAC converter came out, it marked a zenith in Audiolab's digital explorations. Indeed, the CDM/DAC combination (the latter evolving into the Mark II version at around the time the former was born), was hailed as a world-class CD combi.

Hi Paul, thanks for a very informative review. I have owned an Audiolab 8000CDM (Mark II) CD transport since new (c/w a Rega DAC at the moment). The 8000CDM is 20+ years old now but was very well regarded in its day and has performed faultlessly. Do you think that the 6000 CDT would be an improvement? Has CD transport technology improved ...

The third is the product I’m writing about today, the $549 Audiolab 6000CDT CD Transport. While CD’s have almost gone the way of the dodo bird, many audiophiles like myself keep a bunch of their favorites around for relaxed listening sessions. Two CDs I can’t live without are Steely Dan’s “Aja” and Fleetwood Mac’s “Rumors.”

The Audiolab 6000CDT CD transport retails for $549.99, but from the fit and finish of the case to the feel of the controls to the bright OLED display -- and just like the 6000A integrated-DAC -- it looks and feels like a component that costs twice, maybe even thrice the price.

This occured 2 or 3 times per CD. It was definitley NOT the result of scratches of damaged CDs, that sounds totally different. Definitely the Audiolab sounds much much better than my integrated CD player but can't handle the clicks and pauses. I'm going to stick with a CD transport because the results are immediately noticeable.
