From what I remember the 8000S is a more capable amp than the 8000A, but the 8000A has tone controls and a phono preamp, which are both not present on the 8000S. Apart from the phono preamp I would think that both the pre and power stages of the 8000S are superior to the 8000A.

The 8000a shares the same power section as the 8000s but the 8000a has an inferior power supply and cannot separate the pre and power sections without internal modification. Whilst the preamp is still good, it's not as good as the one in the 8000s. Don't forget that the 8000s has a remote as well.

Having owned the Audiolab 8000A series III for a number of years I can give, I hope, a reasonably accurate account of it. I bought it at the time for its accuracy - being partnered with a mildly warm Philips CD850 and mildly forward Tannoy 613's. In reality, it is mildly coloured. Mid range is slightly forward and hi treble is rolled back.

As the owner of a “vintage” 8000S, I can’t imagine why Audiolab’s current product would be better. At best it seems like a lateral move to get a newer version of what you already have. But this is not an informed opinion—I have not heard any of Audiolab’s products since the company’s re-birth.
