The Audiolab 8000AP is an interesting unit. It combines great aesthetics and a small form factor into a rock solid package. It is not going to win a “battle of the silk-screened logos”, but then I find many of those logos irrelevant for my own day-to-day use.

The 8000AP is a 7.1 channel processor. It allows the connection of seven channels: front left, front centre, front right, surround left, surround right, back left and back right, plus a subwoofer channel. All speakers (with the exception of the subwoofer) should be arranged around your normal viewing/listening position.

For those of us whose birthday cakes have candles representing decades rather than years, Audiolab is a name one will remember with affection. Back in the hi-fi bonanza years of the 1980s, this UK brand all but dominated the mid-priced range. And rightly so; the original Audiolab 8000 series two-channel components were fabulous.

The 8000AP (brand new design) is said to out perform the AV32R, particularly the single processor varieties I remain sceptical when these types of claims are made. Sure the software to deal with surround (particularly DTS) and such might have improved, but sonically the AV32DP is very high end.

Audiolab itself is reticent in the 8000AP’s description, referring to its new HDMI-enabled product as a ‘reference quality 7-channel audio processor and preamplifier’. The term ‘AV’ is never mentioned. In practice, the DSP on offer directly services the digital output of AV sources including DVD players, Blu-ray and legacy HD DVD devices.
