This chip must be fed 10 channels of audio data regardless of whether you actually have 10 DACs attached to it. The 2496 uses only channels 1 and 2 (analog pair #1) and channels 9 and 10 (the SPDIF). I don't know why there's a duplication on 11 and 12. In fact, as I recall, the 2496's chip has 10 channels, not 12.
