He said to listen to my favorite music at normal levels and then to turn the volume knob down just one notch per week. Continue doing this until I can no longer hear what I believe I should be hearing. At 1000 watt peaks, the average level is 100 watts. If the speaker "speaks" at 88 dB for one watt at one meter, and you sit three meters away, the level at your listening position is closer to 80 dB for 1 watt from the amp. There is a rough rule of thumb that to sound twice as loud requires 10x the power (watts).

When I'm doing critical listening for mixing, I usually have it around 85dbspl, but I mix in 15 to 30 minute spurts with a 15ish minute break. I think that for a full album worth of enjoyment, 80db should do the trick, but longer than an hour or so, 80 will start to get quiet feeling and you'll be tempted to crank it up which can of course lead to hearing loss.
