The directivity is a major strength for a nearfield monitor system. Because the driver itself is full range down to 200 Hz and planar waves are coherent (e.g. like a laser beam or LED panel compared to a light bulb), the nearfield listening position was full range with astonishing detail and without room artifacts.

This is how recording engineers listen in their control rooms; they know a thing or two about sound. Recall the LS3/5A’s, which were developed for near field listening for remote recording monitor playback. The LS3/5A is still in production and still one of the most revered high-end speakers of all time! Wish I still had mine!

My setup serves double duty of being used primarily nearfield (4 ft from speakers), but also occasionally with volume turned up to play into a 10x15 ft room. Speakers are 1 ft in front of a bay window, and 3 ft from side walls. I've been trying several speakers and have been using Harbeth P3ESRs for the past month.

I myself use Genelec 6010As for this purpose. 3 level 2

A good audiophile speaker should should nice, neutral, punchy and non-fatiguing. Unfortunately, I have not come across many of either that give me the sound I like.
