Feb 12 Technics SL-1200G Direct Drive Turntable. Anthony Kershaw. Analog, Star Component Award. In 2016, after six years out of the SL-1200 turntable business, Japanese giant Technics retooled for a new, audiophile version of the popular turntable. Over the original’s 38 year life span, upwards of 3.5 million were sold. A remarkable HiFi story.

While a basic “audiophile approved” turntable can easily run a couple thousand dollars without a tonearm, you can still find a like – new SL-1200 on the secondary market for $400 -$500 (in the U.S. anyway), so this is an excellent platform for modification. Think of the SL-1200 as the Volkswagen GTI of the turntable world.

Panasonic in 2015 might have spied the audiophile as the most ardent proponent of the Technics SL-1200. And it’s not hard to see why. I ran the (above) MKII version for six months in 2013 and found it not the most exciting listen – a little dull even with a Zu-modded DL-103r cart – but it easily bested entry-level units from Rega and Pro ...

The SL-1200MK2 turntable represents an amazing value for audiophiles that want to get back into the fun and charm of spinning vinyl. I paired mine with a Denon DL-160 cartridge. It sounds nice, really nice. Warm, many times better than many CDs. The …

Is the technics sl-1200 mkii an audiophile turntable or just an overhyped dj turntable? I read glowing reviews on some forums and there seems to be a following for this TT but is it comparable to say a good Thorens or Rega or Pro-ject? Post edited by usp1 on August 2013. 0 ...

Seriously, the SL1200 does fall way short of the accuracy and dynamics expected from a top turntable. So what good is it? It is a reliable and decent performer for those Technics inclined users who do not listen to critically recorded music, and have limited budgets that won't allow for an SP10.

If you can spend a little more the Audio Technica AT150MLX is great with the stock SL-1200 tonearm and is probably the best MM cartridge under $400. The Onkyo TX-8255 only has a MM phono stage, so if you want to use a MC cartridge you will need an outboard phono peramp. At that price range you can get some pretty good moving magnet cartridges.

The SL1200G is a pretty audiophile turntable. Although it looks like the older version, its a complete from-the-ground-up new design. We've mounted both the regular and 12" Triplanar tonearms on the new SL1200s with excellent results. This is one of the most speed-stable machines in production.
