Lets say you have a fuse box > wire going to room > outlet 1 > outlet 2 > outlet 3 > outlet 4 at the end of the line. Lets say your audio equipment uses outlet 2. I would think you would want to place the filter on outlet 1 or 2 in between the incoming AC and the audio equipment.
