Installed the catalyst-dkms proprietary driver for amd as per the arch wiki. Alsa, alsa-utils, etc. have been installed. Sound is up and unmuted in the alsamixer. $ speaker-test -c 2. speaker-test 1.0.26. Playback device is default. Stream parameters are 48000Hz, S16_LE, 2 channels. Using 16 octaves of pink noise.

it does sound like some alsa issue. using kdemod 4 as well. all i had to do for sound setup was installing "kdemod-phonon-backends-xine" and "codecs" from AUR.

Started up Rhythmbox and checked "Watch my Library for new files". It started checking my collection and found everything. It seems that my problem was an issue with the configuration file. I had reinstalled Rhythmbox, but had not done a complete uninstall. This left a corrupted configuration file in my Rhythmbox sub-directory.
