After about 5 hours I got an avi file in xvid format that had audio out of sync. My goal was to try to rip the DVD without having to copy G's of data to my HD.

Der wird mit XviD genauso asynchron wie mit DivX. Es liegt höchstwahrscheinlich an einem nicht übernommenen Delay-Wert der Audiospur in AutoGK. Das solltest Du mal überprüfen. Leider nutze ich AutoGK nicht, weil es mir in den Settings zu wenig konfigurierbar ist und kann dir deshalb nicht weiterhelfen, wo Du diese Einstellung findest.

I just finished doing this and was rather frustrated at how the join vobs didn't work to keep the audio in sync. I found a way to make AutoGK do it. I used dgindex to extract the audio of the concatenated vobs, besweet to change the ac3 to a wav, and nero's wave editor to copy and paste 440ms of sound at the transition of the disks to sync audio.
