The Avondale modded cd3 is very good from what I have heard. New clock and psu, added psu for output stage, regulator modifications and other stuff. Yummy. CD3 uses split rail power supplies unlike the 3.5 which is positive voltage only. I only wish naim had put the same dac chip in the 3.5 that the 3 uses.

CD3.5 - had one for 10 years. With a hi-cap, or better still an Avondale PSU, it organises the music into a bigger, wider sound than the CD3. Very good blend of what the CD3 does, plus a tad more emphasis on placement and detail. A bit brighter, but very solid bass. CD5 - Dials down on some of the forward emphasis of the CD3.5.
