There is nothing wrong with your receiver, the Denon AVR 688 does not pass audio through HDMI. To get sound using HDMI you will have to run an extra audio cable with your HDMI. You have a bunch of choices either digital coax cable, fibre optic cable (toslink), or analog audio cables (red and white). Need any more help just post back.

I have an AVR-688 and just got an Apple TV, which only has HDMI and optical audio outputs. I've got the Apple TV connected direct to the TV since the receiver doesn't support audio playback through to the speakers (or does it? can't get it to anyway). The optical audio I have connected to the optical port 1, which is defaulted to "CD."

A repeater will enable HDMI audio processing from the receiver and repeat the video portion out to your TV or projector. There were older models that were considered HDMI switchers only, (ie: AVR-1508, AVR-1708) meaning they could only pass HDMI audio and video out to your TV.
