Generally, for a balanced connection, the red wire is known as the "hot" wire and carries the main audio signal, while the black one is "cold" and carries the flipped signal (more on this later). In an unbalanced stereo connection, the red is right-side audio and black is left-side audio. We will keep this in mind while building our cable.

More on cable wiring – balanced to unbalanced. T oday we’ll temporarily conclude our thread on cable wiring with suggestions on how to wire balanced outputs into unbalanced inputs. We’ve spent the past few inSync issues detailing exact cable wiring diagrams so hopefully by now we can spare you the drawings and discuss concepts because we ...

The arrangement is shown in the block diagram on page 2 of the technical specification and enlarged in the owner's manual(PDF) e.g. page 26. This produces an unbalanced output that can be used to feed an unbalanced input via either a TS or TRS plug. It can also be used to feed a balanced cable and input via a TRS plug.

The audio is impressed on the one active or hot wire. Nearly all audio inputs require the active wire to be shielded. That is, the ground is braided or spirally wound around the active (hot) wire. The following picture shows electrically, how unbalanced audio is passed from one piece of equipment to another:

The traditional way to feed unbalanced signals to balanced inputs is to have the screen and the cold core connected at the unbalanced end. However, this can sometimes result in earth loop hum problems, in which case you should either disconnect the screen altogether at the unbalanced end, or alternatively connect it via a resistor of between ...

I've read online that the best way to convert balanced XLR to unbalanced 1/4" mono is to buy a cheap passive DI box and run it backwards (XLR as input, 1/4" TS as output). Apparently, this will convert whilst also maintaining the balancing of the XLR cable (which I don't believe the other answers would) and so help to reduce noise.
