LM386 is a very old dog. But you will find all the (linear) audio power amplifier IC's have very poor voltage efficiency. There are losses in the IC's output stage. Some parts added bootstrapping to help somewhat, like TBA820M. With a 9V rail, 8 ohms and 10% THD, the LM386 gives you 500-700mW for a loss of 3.3-2.3V so ending up with a 6V battery.
