Warning: Battlefield 3 is known to be extremely GPU intensive and may cause more heat than most games. edit: apparently there might be a possible RealTek sound driver conflict, too. Your problem seems oddly similar to the dreaded realtek sound-punkbuster lockups that appeared in bc2, APB and some other PB protected games. The only known workarounds are either getting a new sound card or a USB headset.
