Berkeley Audio Design Alpha DAC Review - Reviews ...

The Alpha DAC is very strong in this department with the built-in volume control, remote control, ability to bypass a pre amp, HDCD decoding and indicator of bit perfect audio, and the sample rate display on the front panel. In addition to these considerations I strongly recommend potential purchasers contact a local dealer to discuss their needs.

Berkeley Audio Design Alpha DAC REVIEW by Robert Harley Mar 15th, 2009 A A A Most audio products designed for professional use are sonically inferior compared to the best high-end “consumer” components. That’s because, in the pro world, features, functionality, and reliability under harsh conditions take precedence over sound quality.

The Berkeley is clearly a competently designed DAC. It is showing its age though in lacking USB input (which today is a mandatory input) and somewhat lower performance in objective measurements. So it is hard to recommend it to purchase now over the newer entrants. P.S. Yes, you see references to Schiit Yggdrasil in the above graphs.

The Alpha is housed in a solid chassis, but it’s not the ultra-expensive chassis of the Reference, which is machined from a block of aluminum. In features, the two DACs are identical; two SPDIF inputs on BNC jacks, one TosLink optical input, and one AES/EBU input. Note that no Berkeley DAC offers a USB input.

Alpha DAC Series 3 — Berkeley Audio Design

The Alpha DAC Series 3 has superb resolution of low-level detail, three-dimensional soundstaging with the ability to hear very fine timbral and spatial information at the back of the hall, dense tone color, and outstanding clarity that allows you to hear individual instruments within the whole.”
Review: Berkeley Audio Design Alpha DAC Series 2 DA converter

The Series 2 Alpha DAC retains very much the same basic tonal character of the Series 1 but at the same time is very much improved in the ways stated above. However, I must say it took me a little bit of listening to definitively prefer it to the Series 1.
