Balanced T attenuator pad: The balanced T attenuator has a total of five resistors. As may be imagined, the resistors in the top of the T section are half the value of the equivalent resistors in the unbalanced version of the attenuator pad. As there are two resistors that are effectively split between the two lines, the balanced T attenuator pad has one more resistor than the balanced …

On one hand Putzeys writes that balanced volume control is tricky (except when done with his non-standard solution), on the other, n-core modules invite a differential signal input. 4-deck passive balanced attenuators are manufactured, sold and used. Resistor based ones and TVC or autoformer ones.

Instead of placing the pot between output and ground (4 needed) place the pot between positive and negative output of each balanced channel (2 needed), so one stereo pot would work. This way, depending on impedance of the pot, positive and negative output will cancel each other without connecting to ground.

The input resistance of the modules is 1.8k Ohm and is balanced. In this case, when you really want to get the most out of the NC500, I recommend to use a 4-deck stepped attenuator with 2k total resistance. They do recommend a 50 Ohm source. I don't know the exact reason for this, could be to ensure specs are met.
