I turned off ALL background apps - never had to do that before. And still, after several reboots, when I start the track the playback is not smooth, it stops and starts. Windows audio and your DAW will both play through your AudioBox if that is the only audio interface enabled on your PC. Doing so will also make setting up the driver mode much more straightforward in Cakewalk. But you really, really, don't want to be monitoring your DAW through your on-board PC audio output! audio dropout. so im running sonar 7 with a presonus firestudio project and I'm running into a dropout issue. All the tracks are recording fine for a few minutes and then it craps out. Its random too. Sometimes it records for 20 minites just fine. Amd sometimes i only get 1 minute. I bumped the buffer up but it didnt work.

The factory card can not handle the load so to keep from crashing it chooses to drop or dump the audio. That lets it "catch up" to where it should be...and you hear the drop. The next step in the process would be a total drop of audio needing a restart of the audio engine, followed by a crash of the program....
