If at the end of the tray closing session the motor pulley is still spinning away, but the belt is just stationary (normally lasts for about 2 to 3 seconds), the belt has lost some of its tension. If the motor pulley stops spinning right away, the motor could be faulty. That is less common, but keep that in mind.

I pressed stop, and it stopped. I pressed "8" to go to the next song, and it wouldn't read, so I opened and closed the tray. Now I cannot hear the motor moving the laser to start reading at all, the display shows "--:--", it blinks but the cd's won't load. If I close the tray without cd, it keeps blinking and the message "No Disc" does not come.

For the past several months now my 640C's been acting up intermittently (dammit). I open the tray and place a disc inside, then close the tray. The player doesn't read the disc at all, and after a few seconds reopens the tray automatically (with the word "CLOSE" on the display until the tray opens).

Yes, the usually blamed tray driving belt is doing its job of open and close. Thanks to ebolatone for the pictures and disassembly instructions (forced me to try a puzzle and poke method). Thanks also to the guy who discovered the "lift and drop the front of the player about an inch". Still love the sound the Cambridge Audio Azur 640C produces
