The design is minimalist and elegant in Primare’s usual way, and general standards of build and finish are high, bar some slightly rough edges to the lid and base at the back.

This is CD player that is very good for the price. It has a very natural sound and you feel in nearly all cases that you are hearing the sounds that the artists who recorded the music wanted you to hear. It can sound a bit clumsy at times when things get complex, but during quietier moments it really comes into its own (within it's price range).

The other Steve below who posted 3 stars in his April 29, 2012 review probably works for a store selling competitor's gear, but no Cambridge. Well, I also happen to own the Teac PD-H600 (for my office system) and frankly, as good as the TEAC is, it is NOWHERE of the same caliber as the 840C - not comparable by any stretch of the imagination.

The old Cambridge Audio CD players have developed a bit of a reputation thanks to the Lampizator site. I was interested in trying one out and particularly hearing the TDA1541 chip. Last year I picked up a CD2 that had been boxed up from about 1994 as it had stopped working then. It had been bought new in 1989 for £650! Well today I managed to get and keep …

It has HUGE, expansive sound, with enormous power, energy, pronounced yet clean trebles, ultra big bass, nice mids, etc. It is like Mister Olympia - muscular, too much of everything, but impressive nevertheless. To the trained ear like mine it shows the treble to be on a …
