Written on: 19/01/2005 by rayl (1 review written) I bought my Cambridge Audio Diskmagic 1 very cheap, as new old boxed stock when I was a manager for a hi-fi store, we had one lying about in the main warehouse. I wanted to try a transport with an XLR output as my arcam alpha five plus being used as a transport was getting tired and tetchy.

The Cambridge Audio DiscMagic Compact Disc Transport is a nice piece of audio equipment. It sounds very nice when coupled with the MSB Link DAC III. I do find the sound to be a little better when using a Canare BNC to RCA digital cable as compared to a MSB digital cable (RCA to RCA) and the supplied BNC to RCA adapter.

One model in question, the Cambridge Audio CD1, remains a most useful reference machine; in several respects, it forms the cornerstone of this review, though stories circulate concerning its below-average reliability and an unacceptable failure level in transit—things that should be history, now that it is distributed in the US by Sumiko.

The Cambridge Audio DacMagic 200M - for both good and less good reasons - feels very much like a continuation of one of the most longstanding names in affordable DACs. I’m writing this conclusion while it is playing Agnes Obel’s Aventine into the Edge A and Kudos C1.
