I just purchased the Cary SLP88. It is not broken in fully, and hence that has to be taken into account. This is a heavy preamp compared to others I am familiar with (Marsh p2000, Audio Note M-Zero, Bottlehead Foreplay, ARC LS7).

Cary built the P-3 for N.E.W. (a company now defunct) which resembles an AES DJH and Cary SLP-50. According to a conversation I had with Dennis Had, he got a lot of mileage out of that preamp design. For $150 Cary will upgrade the unit to accept 6CG7 tubes. According to Dennis this will make the preamp scream.

This is a review of the Cary SLP-94 as an upgrade from the SLP-90. This pre-amp, with it's built in phono stage alwasy had good sound. At the time I bought it for about $2400 it was pretty unique in having exposed tubes in a chrome body. I had compared it to others and liked it best for the reasons mentioned above.
