Cary V12i vs V12R??? - High-End Audio Discussion Forum
https://forum.audiogon.com/discussions/cary-v12i-vs-v12r
I just purchased a Cary v12i and find the amp to be just as good as it is supposed to be. My system consists of a BAT VK50SE preamp and Electrocompaniet CDP, and a pair of Verity Audio Fidelio speakers. I swapped the stock 6922's for some Telefunkin's and the EL 84's are Mullards with EH EL34's. Very tight bass, great midrange.

Cary CAD-280 SA V12i complete with original factory double boxes and full Electro Harmonix tube set purchased directly from Cary (<50 hours). Would be very close to near mint with the exception of a blemish on the corner of the rear transformer cover, which has been touched up. Originally $4,000 and hard to beat on used market.

Up for grabs is a Cary Audio 280 SA "V12i" All-tube Power Amplifier. This is the V12i version with the 6922 input tubes, considered the "best" sounding version. All-tube glory with enough power to drive most any speakers to very satisfying levels, bloom and soundstage that goes on for days, yet with plenty of detail and slam...this is a great amp!

According to Cary Audio designer Dennis Had in this amplifier's documentation, "Countless hours were spent designing and voicing the CAD-280SA V12 stereo amplifier...It delivers high performance in a combination of class-A single-ended triode and true balanced push-pull technology." Whew, I thought to myself. Push-pull.

The V12R is sweet and detailed, but it just can’t a hold a candle to those 2 magical 45 triode watts. If you like the Cary “house sound”, you will love this amplifier. The original V12 earned a Stereophile Class A recommendation. The V12R improves upon and surpasses the original V12 in every single aspect from what I understand.

First, the amplifiers' model number is the Cary CAD 280 MB V12i, in my case. Not 280 SA. That is the stereo amp, not the MB or monoblocks. Second, at my eagis, I changed the feedback resistor to 47k ohms (use Vishay Dale 1% replacement), the value that is now recommended by the factory (was earlier and variously, 10k or 22k ohms).
