I don't think you should enable the mixer in ffdshow audio, because you don't want to upmix stereo to 5.1 because it sounds wrong. I havn't got any 7.1 audio material, so there is no need to downmix from 7.1 to 5.1. If you had a lot of 7.1 audio and only had a 5.1 setup then these settings would not be right for you.

Okey dokey, this turned into quite the information chase for me and i learnt a bit. The info below is only useful if you have these Zalman 5.1 headphones, 5.1 soundcard, want to use ffdshow audio and decoder filters and (optional) to upsample stereo anything up to 5.1 and playback thru your 5.1 headphones.

that is what ffdshow does... it finds the spdif and passes the sound to it. ffdshow also encodes but you can choose what you want it to do. i currently use a bluegears cad that encodes everything but in ffdshow i set it up to pass ac3 and dts unaltered. doing this allow multi channel audio leaving a game to be encoded but dvd audio goes directly to my receiver.

CCCP Settings -> Next -> check Reset All Settings and Re-Register All Filters and hit Apply, then try to play the file again and/or do another test render. Just as an FYI: Adobe Premiere's codec here is decoding the AAC audio instead of ffdshow; happens all the time with all sorts of codecs.

* click the mixing tab and enable mixing select speaker config as 5.1 Now see if you get 5.1 audio from the file, if you dont then you can try following this guys guide in tweaking MPC-HC for HTPC usage using ffdshow or look at XBMC instead, dont tick the box for TrueHD only select AC3/DTS and XBMC should re-encode the TrueHD to AC3 5.1 on the fly.
