The 'normal' 2 second pause (silence) is the pregap (index 00) of each track. When cdrecord burns the audio files (without using the info files or a cue sheet) it just concatenates the audio data (assuming writing in disc at once mode) which in result creates a gapless CD with no audible pauses between the tracks.
