When I first listened to the 5001 I perceived the mid range to be on the grainy side. The vocals also sounded too pulled back and too airy. Bass response seemed to extend deep enough but was a bit muddy, not as tight as my tube model. High frequency response and detail was very good, not overly bright like most earlier CD players that I've owned.

When I added a Sim Audio Moon I-5 to the mix, through my Harbeth Compact 7's, I fully expected the CD5001's weaknesses to be revealed. Not so. In fact, it did quite the reverse. It reinforced its strengths--which are, are: "organic" naturalness, punchy bass, warmth, excellent mids, and voice that is presented in remarkable realism.

Incidently, the single-disk CD5001 received excellent user feedback at AudioReview. Click here for the reviews. Both the CC4001 and the CD5001 share the "SACD Grade" Cirrus Logic CS4392 DAC and I would imagine they would sound pretty similar. But I would be interested in the opinions of anyone who has tried the CC4001.
