I very much enjoyed my time with the Channel Islands Audio VDA-2. I found it to be involving and fun. I think it represents a nice value at its $599 price point, with a nice upgrade path. I wish it had a USB port, but it's by no means a deal breaker in this case.

The VDA-2 is also a very slow to burn-in. It takes a good 100 hrs of steady play for it to really shift gears, and then for a couple of months it sounds better every time you turn it on. I listened to a lot of cdp's and a few dacs, all of which more expensive that the VDA-2, and none of them produced the rich, full, spacious sound that it does.

I love my VDA 2/ VAC 1 combo, it's the best sounding source component I've ever owned. I've owned several decent players, 2 Audio Alchemy dacs, and a CAL Alpha. The VDA 2 beats them all. I'm using a Sony DVP 9000ES as the transport which in it's own right isn't bad but it doesn't come close to this little gem. This review pretty much sums it up:

I am reviewing the VDA-2, not the VDA-1. I am putting my review here, as Audio Review has chosen not to create a new listing for the VDA-2 product from CI Audio. These two DACs are quite different however. First the upshot: This is an incredibly good DAC. Secondly, the customer support offered by Channel Islands Audio is second to none.
