Just because a mini-jack is digital does not mean it can support multi-channel sound beyond 2.0. The Astro mixamp that comes with the a50 allows for optical line in and will mix the stereo 3.5mm jack. It's not dual optical, but it's not a bad option. I use that with an audio jack volume potentiometer (if that's right, at work; term might be wrong).

Firstly, as I suggested, you don't need the optical connection to access audio from your PVR. Your PVR can convey both audio and video via HDMI and the amp can access audio being cpnveyed to it via HDMI. Go into your PVR's settings and activate HDMI audio. The receiver can assign the optical AV1 input to any of its video inputs.
