Also, depending on how you've hooked up your 64 (Commodore Monitor, Analogue TV, LCD, Plasma, etc), have you tried using an alternate display for fault finding purposes (trying to eliminate wether the display is at fault or the 64 itself). If using the A/V port on the 64, maybe try another cable, or worse, try the RF connection.

Well, I hooked up an RF cable to the Commodore, hooked it up to the TV, and lo and behold, there was SOUND! I hooked it back up to the 1902 Monitor just to make sure it was no fluke that there was no sound before, and this time not …

If they are UK PAL C64 and you're not in the UK you won't get any sound over RF unless you have a multi system TV. On C64C there's a small switch on the RF box to switch between PAL-I and PAL-G... Don't know about the plain C64, should be a jumper somewhere. If you hook stuff up to the sound while the C64 is on you can damage the SID-chip.

I tried a 5-pin composite video cable connected to the front and get the same thing, video works but no sound. I also tried connecting a handheld video camera to the front of the monitor and same problem, video works but no sound. Finally, I connected my C64 to my TV using the 5-pin cable and both video and sound work fine.

The buzzing sound you can hear is called the "Audio Leak". Some of the video signal leaks into the audio line and that's the sound you can hear. Depending on what is one the screen, that sound can get louder or softer. The black screen you got when you plugged the SID chip back in was probably due to you inserting the chip the wrong way around.

Posted: Sun Dec 14, 2014 6:37 pm Post subject: Breadbin: no sound I bought a 1983 breadbin-style C64 at a carboot sale and it works fine - only there is no sound. I have connected the C64 to my HDTV with the RF cable and with A/V leads from the 8-pin socket, but get the same results with each - no sound.
