It's quite likely that Core Audio doesn't support a physical format of 32-bit integer at all. Some DAC does have a 32 Bit integer physical format. Integer Mode (Virtual Format is nonmixable integer) will send DAC native format (e.g. 16 or 32 Bit integer) directly to the lowest level in CoreAudio and bypassing the format converter. Integer Mode is only available on the device where there is kAudioFormatFlagIsNonMixable flag in its available virtual format.
