No, you cannot plug in a microphone into the D90. There really isn't. I would recommend you to buy a Zoom H1 which is a separate sound recording device that records sound onto SD cards. It is rather cheap, but has much, much better sound quality than the D90's built in microphone. Actually it' much better than the D7000's build in microphone as well.

I wouldn't even attempt to wire the AV Out to the audio input from mic... that's like open heart surgery for your D90, and one little slipup = fail. You would be wise to add a mini-jack or 1/4" input via the audio input bus IF you tamper with anything... rerouting circuits inside of the D90 may prove to be a fatal attempt!
