The Dell specific sound driver is needed, as we have found (on the Dell forum) that non-Dell sound drivers either do not work or do not work correctly. Make sure the SigmaTel is shown as the sound device in the Device Manager. If it shows something else, such as "HD Audio Codec" or "IDT HD Audio" that is incorrect.

Both expansion cards do support Hi-Def output but they don’t have HDMI ports. XPS 420′s audio chip is from Sigmatel. If you reinstall the drivers downloaded from Dell’s website it tells you that the object/device cannot be found. The Dell XPS 420 audio works out of the box, PC-restore sometimes works but eventually it loses the audio again.

Sound was back again without needing a reboot. Then I ran verify and repair permissions from the disk utility app manually. After rebooting several times to test it out the sound is still working. I hope this description will save someone else the time and frustration of installing OS X on their Dell. Good luck.
